SQUARE DEALING
FOR 60 YEARS

— * A

^Design ^ook M> 250

This book is published as an aid to architects, building contrac-
tors and dealers in recommending appropriate woodwork for home
builders.

With each passing year home builders are recognizing to a greater
extent the desirability of choosing a type of architecture that will
endure— that will always be "in style"— and woodwork that will
harmonize with the architecture. Upon the harmony of doors,
windows, stairways, built-in furniture, and even the exterior and
interior trim, depends the permanent satisfaction of the home.

In turning the following pages you will find woodwork in many
attractive designs, which will conform to any general style of archi-
tecture you desire.

This book contains illustrations and specifications of the most
popular standard designs in woodwork developed as a result of our
sixty years of constant contact and growth with the building in-
dustry. Each piece of woodwork shown is manufactured from
highest quality materials in the Gould factory and on the Gould
plan of

Standardization— Volume Production — Moderate Cost

In addition to the standard designs shown in this book, we are
equipped to manufacture special designs to any specifications de-
sired.

Price booklets will be mailed upon request

Hardwood Veneered Doors

Exterior and Interior

The door adds much to the appearance of the home. The en-
trance door is the focal center— the first feature noticed by both
friends entering and strangers passing by. It furnishes the first
impression of the home and its occupants. Be certain that it con-
forms to the general style of architecture.

Interior doors are always conspicuous, to both family and friends.
Be sure they harmonize with interior furnishings and add to the
permanent beauty of the home.

Guarantee

€/&*$- Qt^^* Veneered Doors are known wherever fine wood-
work is used. They are recognized as the highest
expression of the door maker's art. Every Gould Veneered Door is
made of the best kiln dried wood, built by skilled workmen and
followed through the course of construction by rigid inspection.

These doors are thoroughly dry when they leave the factory.
Unless otherwise ordered they are furnished "in the white" and the
finishing left to the personal taste of the home owner. For these
reasons Gould Veneered Doors should be protected from rain or
excessive dampness and should not be stored in damp places, such
as basements or rooms in which plastered walls are not thoroughly
dried.

Exterior Veneered Doors should be protected from the weather
by a wide overhanging projection. We recommend, as soon as the
door is fitted, the painting of the top and bottom edges and apply-
ing at least two coats of good exterior varnish to the surface.

Oak Doors should be treated with a coat of filler, and Birch
Doors with a coat of shellac, before varnish is applied.

Q|*^ Qj^* Veneered Doors are ABSOLUTELY GUAR-
ANTEED if the above recommendations
are complied with.

For the Larger Home and
Apartment Building

Notice the increasing number of large homes,
apartment buildings and club homes which are
using the type of entrance door shown to the
right.

There is reason for this preference — the large
glass area furnishes an abundance of light for
vestibule, entrance hall or lobby, it is well pro-
portioned, and a style of entrance that seems to
extend a warm friendly welcome.

Such entrance doors are appropriate in build-
ings of any construction — brick, stone, stucco or
wood.

A Beautiful Home Deserves a
Beautiful Door

The Circle Top entrance door is rapidly in-
creasing in popularity. The illustration to the
right shows this new door in a beautiful setting
— an actual reproduction of a suburban city
home.

The Circle Top Door is artistic, beautiful and
"different." It furnishes an opportunity for the
expression of individuality in designing the en-
trance.

This door can be had with many or few lights,
furnishing as much or as little light for the in-
terior as desired.

It is especially attractive when set in recess or
with a canopy over the door.

The Solid Softwood Door

The Entrance— first impression of both passers-
by and friends— last impression of friends de-
parting from the home.

The illustration to the right shows a Gould
entrance door of clear White Pine painted to
suit the individual taste of the home owner.
It is an actual reproduction of a home in a small
Middle Western city.

Gould Softwood Doors are furnished "in the
white" which makes it convenient to finish them
in harmony with surrounding decorations. After
being properly painted they are not affected by
weather.

The following pages show Softwood Doors for
both exterior and interior use.

The Gould Combination Door

It is just what the name implies — a double purpose door for year
around service. It is attractive, practical wherever storm and screen
doors are used, and economical.

This Gould Door need never be removed from the hinges.
Simply loosen the two special socket screw fasteners, remove one
section, put in the other, tighten the screws and it is an entirely
different door. Anyone can make the change in two minutes. The
sections are light in weight— much easier to handle and store away
than the old style storm or screen door.

Unlike the ordinary type this Gould Combination Door has a
tongue-and-groove joint at bottom rail. This assures greater
strength and quicker change, requiring only two fasteners instead
of the usual four.

The illustration at the left shows
the Gould special Socket Screw
Combination Door Fastener. Solid
brass — non-rusting. Secure but
simple — easy to operate.

To the right is shown the simple
yet sturdy method of securing the
lower part of the glass or screen
section — the tongue-and-groove in-
tersection at bottom rail.

PUTTYLESS WINDOWS

The most important improvement in window construction
in recent years is shown in this Gould Puttyless Window.
Lead strips are used in place of putty to seal and hold the
glass in place. Gould Puttyless Windows are air-tight,
water-tight, rattle-proof, and more attractive in appearance.
Adaptable for all kinds of buildings— applied on all kinds
of windows and sash — glazed with all kinds of glass.
A sample model will be mailed free upon
request.

REGLAZING PUTTYLESS WINDOWS

Another reason for the popularity of this modern window
is the ease of re glazing. Notice the illustrations above.

Detail" A" — shows lead strip partly turned down. This
can be done with a dull knife or screw driver.

Detail "B" — turn lead down flat on bevel of sash, remove
broken glass and place in new glass.

(continued on following page)

REGLAZING PUTTYLESS WINDOWS

Detail " C"— then simply turn lead back on glass and finish
edge of glass with screw driver or similar tool.

Detail*' D" shows type of bar used in Puttyless Windows
having divided lights. These heavy bars mean added strength
and beauty.

Notice the bevel of the rails and bars. This prevents accu-
mulation of moisture and rotting of the wood.

Interior Trim

Most home owners build once for a life-time.
They want a house that will be a real home —
that will become dearer to them with each pass-
ing year. Harmony at the beginning means
satisfaction always.

Harmony in the larger phases of the architec-
ture is important. Harmony in the smaller de-
tails is equally important. "Trifles make per-
fection and perfection is no trifle."

The interior door and window trim illustrated
on the following pages are details that play an
important part in the finishing of the home.
Doors and windows are as conspicuous to guests
as the pictures on the walls and their "frames"
should be in harmony with the other woodwork
in the home.

Interior Trim, like all other woodwork shown
in this book, is a standard Gould product made
in our own plant and guaranteed by us. It is
furnished in the white and can be painted any
color or stained to suit individual desires.

Beautiful Stairways

Within the majority of homes the stairway is
perhaps the most conspicuous woodwork. Near
the front entrance it is noticed alike by casual
caller, friend and family.

While its chief function is to make the second
floor easily accessible, it can serve a double
purpose by adding beauty to the interior.

The stairway shown to the right, and those
on the following pages, incorporate beauty with
utility. These, and any other style desired, are
easily constructed of Gould standard stair parts
illustrated on pages 181 to 192.
